Building Responsible, Inclusive and Accountable AI
Dr Ruwangi Fernando is an award-winning leader in Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) — recognised nationally and internationally for championing ethical, inclusive and transparent AI systems that serve all communities.
She currently serves as Australia’s Country Researcher for the Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI), Executive-in-Residence at Victoria University, and Chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee at the Australian Computer Society (ACS) Victoria. Her work bridges research, policy, and practice to turn responsible AI into a competitive advantage for both industry and government.
Ruwangi completed her PhD in Computer Science at Victoria University, supported by a scholarship from CSIRO’s Data61 and an industry internship with the Department of Transport (Victoria). Her doctoral research developed AI and machine-learning models that optimise traffic management during large-scale events, reducing congestion and carbon emissions.
